Your interviewer wants to know you will be a good fit for their company. Therefore, you must choose a strength that is relevant to the position, but also something the company looks for. Do not talk about your programming ability if you are applying to a manager position. Do not talk about your leadership skills if you’re applying for an entry-level position. Instead, choose something that is essential to your potential position. 

The strength you choose will show that you understand the company culture. 

Your answer will also tell the interviewer how much you understand the position and the company. By choosing a necessary skill, you are showing that you did your research and know what qualities are necessary for the role.

Basically, you can choose any strength that will complement the job and the team you are joining. In general, I recommend choosing a soft skill rather than a technical skill. It’s better to talk about a skill that will make you a good member of the team instead of only good at your role.

Fortunately, many job listings share the ideal qualities of the candidates they are looking for. It is recommended you look at the job post for ideas.

Some possible strengths are: communication, resourcefulness, adaptability, collaboration, determination, passion, empathy, patience.

Notice these skills are not specific to one position. The right quality will be one that you believe the company will value.

Find your example to talk about your strength

Telling someone that you have a certain quality is not enough. You need to illustrate a time when you used that quality.

Think of a specific time that you used your communication skills or that you were adaptable. Tell the interviewer the context and the actions that you took and how those actions illustrate your strength.

“I think my biggest strength is my ability to adapt to the circumstances. In my last position as an event coordinator, we had to adapt quickly when the pandemic started. All of our scheduled events were canceled at the same time and our company’s revenue dropped 80% overnight. We had to find ways to adapt our conferences to a virtual format and convince organizations to participate. I sat down as soon as we realized what was happening and we discussed possible tools and formats. As a result, we were actually able to save some of the events that had been canceled originally. But the best past is that we were able to reach new audiences with our virtual events and return our revenues to pre-pandemic levels.”
