At some point in your English interview, your interviewer will ask you, “why do you want to work here?”
This is a great opportunity during your interview conversation, to show that you’ve done your research and you know a little about the company. Remember, the interviewer wants to know why you want to work at this company specifically.
This question is about finding someone who is enthusiastic and prepared.
Your skills and qualifications are what gets you into the room. Now, it’s time to show that you understand the company and what they value. You need to show the interviewer that you are not only better than other candidates, but can also succeed in the company culture.
The company spends precious time and resources to make new hires, this question helps make sure the candidate for the job is committed and engaged in the process. A good answer to “why do you want to work here” can move you to the top of the list, and a bad one can end your chances of getting the job.
For that reason, you want to make your answer specific. Be prepared with important information before you arrive in the interview. You should already be aware of the company’s mission, values and goals.
Then you need to find the connection.
There are numerous ways to connect yourself to the position. Some examples include:
All of these, and there are others, will show that you’ve done your research and prove that you are motivated to work at that specific company.
In this example, the applicant is an industrial engineer and is applying to work at an agricultural company that mentions “sustainability” as one of their core values and has initiatives to replenish rainforests in different parts of the world.
“I’d like to work here because I believe the company’s mission to provide sustainable solutions to today’s farming industry is vital for our planet. In my previous job, I was responsible for optimizing power use at our factories across Europe to reduce our impact on the surrounding environment. Together with my team, I reduced carbon emissions by 12% the last year without reducing production. I’ve always felt passionate about finding more sustainable solutions and I know I will bring that passion to this role and help your company make an impact if I get the chance.”
Another example:
Imagine a designer applying to work at Apple.
“I remember when I was 15 and I got my first iPhone. It completely transformed my life. It was so intuitive and easy to use and, just, beautiful. I got into illustration and eventually design because of an app I found on that phone. Basically, this company’s product inspired my whole career. When I saw the job listing for this position, I had to apply. It would be such a privilege to be part of the team that inspires the next generation of designers. If I get the chance, I will use my skills and passion for the job to work with the team to create something amazing.”
Speaking about a connection will show the interviewer that you’ve done some research. They will recognize that you took time to find out about the company and therefore feel very serious about this interview.
Connecting yourself to a value will help the interviewer understand how you can fit into the company and their culture. You can also offer details on how you will help the company meet its goals.
Finally, answering this question well will help the interviewer understand your personality and motivation. Your interviewer will have a clearer picture of who you are and why you’re the best person for the job.
